6 Top Tips for Making Mummy Friends

Becoming a mum really changes your world, and it takes some adjustment to this new life with a baby. Although the days with your new arrival are great, it can still feel quite lonely. It is only natural to crave that interaction with others, especially those who are going through the same experience and understand all that comes with motherhood.

Don’t be left to feel lonely as a new mum! At Beautiful Bambino, we understand how daunting it can be as a new mum, so here are a few tips on how to make mummy friends and lifelong connections.

Check Out Local Groups

There are often a few baby and toddler groups or events happening in your local services, such as the library, children’s centre or even local gym. You may be able to find playgroups, reading and rhyme times, pool sessions and more. Get the conversation going by asking other parents there how they’re finding the sessions, how long they’ve been coming, what other groups they recommend, etc. It’s the perfect way to break the ice.

Go to Other Child-Friendly Places

Nowadays, there is an abundance of places that are “child-friendly” to relax and meet others. In addition to your local park, play centre or library, there are plenty of child-friendly coffee shops and restaurants that make it easy and enjoyable for parents to visit with their children. Even some cinemas are introducing baby-friendly screenings during the day for parents to bring their baby to.

Find Other Likeminded Mums Online

Social media is all about being social, so it’s a great place to connect with other local mums. Find a local group on Facebook where mums can come together to talk about the perils of motherhood and arrange playdates and general meetups. The great thing about groups is that when you’re up at 2 am because your little one refuses to go to sleep, there’s a good chance you’ll find another mum in the same situation to talk to. Can’t find a group local to you? Why not start your own?

Social media isn’t the only great place to connect with others online. There are plenty of parenting forums to get involved with too. You’re sure enough to find other mums who can relate to what you’re going through!

Plan a Playdate

Don’t wait for opportunities to come your way. Be brave and plan your own playdate with the mums and their children you’ve already come across. Don’t worry if you don’t know them very well yet. This is your chance to get to know them more.

Meet Up (Without the Kids!)

You do not always have to use your baby as an excuse to get out. One great way of really getting to know others is by arranging a “date” without the kids. So, pick up the courage to ask other mums out for a coffee or something to eat while your little ones are at nursery. Ask them to bring someone else along too – the more the merrier!

Don’t Feel Discouraged

While all mums have similar stories to share and shouldn’t feel alone in their journey, everyone is still different and experiencing motherhood in their own way. If you ask another mum for a coffee and they decline, don’t take it personally. They could have just spent half the night up with their baby and running on three hours sleep! There are plenty of mums out there feeling the same as you when it comes to making friends, so don’t be too shy to get out there and start conversations. You never know when it could lead to an everlasting friendship!
