Your Baby At 1 Month Old 11th March 2019 – Posted in: Advice

1 month old baby

What a whirlwind of a first month it is after your little one has made his or her debut! Your lives are about to change during these early weeks, but nothing is more rewarding. This is a time of learning for both you and your baby, as you discover what life is like with a newborn, and he or she starts learning about themselves and the world around them. As you get ready to bring your baby home, find out more of what to expect with your baby at one-month-old.

Natural Reflexes at the Ready

It’s amazing to think all that your baby can already do! In fact, they are born with over 50 natural reflexes. So, don’t worry about them not knowing how to do things like drink as this isn’t a learned skill. They already know what to do when it comes to feeding time from opening their mouth and rooting for the source and the sucking action needed.

These natural reflexes are also responsible for how they react when being startled. Babies will also take steps when held upright with their feet touching the ground, although we know we’re not quite ready to be doing this one their own just yet!

Discovering the Senses

Your one-month-old baby should be able to experience taste, smell, touch and hear with those abilities already developed at birth, although their eyesight is still a bit blurry! Your baby can differentiate between different tastes (salty, sweet, bitter and sour) and can even hear you quite well, so don’t be afraid to talk to them quite a bit. However, their sight is fuzzy and can only see things close to their face (about 25cm away). This is where black and white toys come in handy, as they will be able to distinguish between the light and dark areas.

Get a Wiggle On

Your baby has just spent a good nine months in the confines of the womb, so they have a lot of muscles they’re going to be trying for the first time! They will be stretching and wiggling around a lot, flexing out these newly discovered limbs. This is a good thing as it helps them grow.

While they will be moving around their arms and legs aimlessly, they still like to be snuggled up firmly in a blanket for comfort.

Get Talking

As we previously mentioned, your little one’s hearing should be fully developed at birth. Not only will your voice be soothing to them, but it will also help with language development skills – even from this very early age. Don’t be afraid to talk away at your baby, read a fun little baby book or even sing a song. They are taking it all in!
