Baby’s First Year in a Nutshell 6th February 2019 – Posted in: Advice

Baby's first year

The first 12 months of your child’s life could be the most exciting for parents. In a relatively short amount of time, your baby grows and develops at an incredible rate, reaching a new milestone every month. Here are some of the exciting things you can expect during baby’s first year.

1 Month – Talk Away

You may not know it, but even at this very early stage in your baby’s life, they’re picking up on language skills! So, as you’re caring for your newborn, be sure to talk to them quite a bit, as your voice is quite soothing to them also.

2 Months – Time to Smile

Your little one is starting to show more facial expressions, including smiling and imitating your own expressions.

3 Months – Build Those Muscles

This is a good time to start building some muscles. Playtime on the tummy will help your baby strengthen muscles in the neck to support their own head, and eventually for rolling over on their own and crawling.

4 Months – Lots of Laughs

More things (food or otherwise!) are finding their way to your baby’s mouth as their hand-eye coordination develops. This is also usually the time parents start to hear that wonderful tiny belly laughter from their little one.

5 Months – So Emotional!

Your baby will be showing more emotions than ever and expressing their wants and needs a lot easier. This includes putting up arms when they want up or crying because you’ve left a room or a toy they had is now gone.

6 Months – Time to Eat

One of the biggest milestones your baby will experience is at about six months where they try solid foods for the first time. Expect messes, but that’s all part of the learning and sensory process. And is that a tooth making an appearance? Get plenty of teethers and gum soothing gels!

7 Months – Word Association

Language development is happening at a rapid rate now. Your little one will associate words with people and objects, like “mummy”, “daddy”, their own name and even the pets.

8 Months – Lots to Explore

At eight months, your baby will be starting to explore things on their own by rolling, crawling and even pulling themselves up more. Once they start, they won’t stop! Your time chasing after them starts now.

9 Months – Finding Comfort

Nine months of age is a fun time for everyone, as baby becomes much more talkative and interactive. They start to show favouritism towards toys and blankets, particularly for comfort.

10 Months – First Words

It’s this time where babies will often know what they like and definitely don’t like, and they’ll surely let you know! All that babbling and chattering turns into words too, so be listening and encouraging the words to come out.

11 Months – Time to Get Messy

Sensory play is important at this stage in your baby’s life. Don’t be afraid to get messy with them as they explore different textures. This is also the perfect time to encourage them to use imagination and creativity during play, such as with dolls or stuffed toys.

12 Months – Happy Birthday!

Wow! What a whirlwind these last 12 months have been! Your baby will feel more confident than ever to keep exploring on their own. They may be taking their first steps and have a growing vocabulary, but they will still look to mummy and daddy for comfort and reassurance.

It is important to remember that every baby will develop at their own pace. Everyone is different, and that’s okay! If you are ever unsure of your baby’s development, always consult your doctor.
